Wasted days and wasted nights

Not much going on today. Trying to contact someone about a shower head that I want to get rid of. It works, but I have another one that I use. Sometimes it's hard since I work at a SuperCenter and my sister works nights.

Earth Day-a day late

OK so I was planning on celebrating Earth Day yesterday but I got a bad case of some stomach bug. So I celebrated by hauling my recyclable materials to the recycle center and airing up my tires a day later than I had planned (I checked my tires and found out that they were at 30 PSI...the factory recommends 32 PSI but most PT Cruiser owners I know say that they get better gas mileage without sacrificing safety at 34 PSI).

Plant a tree widget

Watch a video-plant a tree. Hey, when you're watching Dancing with the Stars, how hard could it be?

Interesting!

C'mon, let's get us some trees planted!!!

Little girl, big tree

I had to share this one...I work as a cashier for a major retail chain and today they had me on the lawn and garden register. And such a perfect day, too, with temps in the 70s, clear skies, and a slight breeze! Anyway this little girl and her mother had done some shopping for plants. One of their purchases included a fruit tree. She was soooo exited she could hardly contain herself! She kept saying, "I want to plant the tree first! I want to plant the tree!" Now I always talk to the children that come through my register. I told her, "I see that! Planting a tree is a good thing, isn't it?"

Her response was, "Yes it helps us!"

Out of the mouths of babes...

Drip drip drip...

Not much to report today...except that I had a couple of plumbers over to repair the leaky bathtub and shower faucets (my bathroom has a bathtub/shower and my sister's bathroom, while it is considered a full bath, has only a shower and a toilet). That should save water!!!

Pump shock

OK today I took my tiny van to the gas pump...she's supposed to get a minimum of 22 mpg and a max of 30. Well, she only got 20. I am thinking I should check her tires again. It seems that when her tire pressure goes down, so does her gas mileage. I love driving her, she's fun to drive...but she can be a guzzler when her tire pressure is low.

One town to another

Well I finally located the closest recycling center and hauled my recyclables off.

I just moved to this town a few months ago and we don't have cubside recycling. We have to haul it ourselves. I figure that I can combine it with other errands. For instance, the grocery store where I do most of my shopping is about a half of a mile away, so I can haul my recyclables to the center and unload. Then I can make a left to get out of the parking lot...and that will take me to the stoplight. Make another left at the stoplight and then head for the grocery store, where I'll use my tote bags instead of their plastic bags. I thought about going to the grocery store first but then I thought if I had eggs or something like that in the car and the items fell on them I'd have a mess to clean up! Oh well...Brown (aka UPS) may not be right on this one.

It's a done deal!

Today while my sister was at work I installed a low-flow areator on her bathroom sink. I'm hoping she won't notice the difference; the one I chose was a male areator that looks identical to the one she had, but with one difference. Well, make that two differences. The washer on her old areator was worn. This areator has a brand new washer and is, of course, low flow.

Water conservation

OK so I am still new to this. I'm in the process of making my home more eco-friendly by installing low flow areators and shower heads. Right now I only have one sink that is not on a low flow areator and that is in my sister's bathroom (yes, you read that right...my younger sister is my roommate), and I've hit a glitch installing the low flow showerhead. As for the toilets, I can't afford a new toilet so I have to work with what I've got. I have a bottle of water and pebbles in my toilet, but the problem is that it still floats around...so I am thinking that I don't have enough pebbles in it.

I also found an interesting website, which I will put in this post. But before I continue I must say that I am not "evangelical." I prefer to think of myself as just Christian. A Christian who happens to be eco-friendly...or rather is trying to become eco-friendly. But it is a good website.

Good evening

Good evening, folks! I am Miss Dixie. I am proud of the fact that I was born and raised in the South in that it is a beautiful land, whether you're in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the bayous of Louisiana, or the Mississippi River Delta, and I want to keep it that way! So that is the purpose of this blog-to share information about saving our planet.

I've started saving my coffee grounds. I plan on putting them in my new compost. My soil isn't great, but I figure if I start composting and add a few natural "helpers" like earthworms, it would help. That's not much but it's a start!
