Whacked up mentality?

Okay, okay, I borrowed a quote from CSI: NY. But it fits what I'm thinking. I was reading about some legislation where animal rights activists could be considered terrorists, and that even people who were associated with them could be spied on.

Please don't get me wrong. Ask me to choose between the wildlife refuge and the opportunity for drilling for oil in Alaska and the wildlife refuge stays. But I know several people who are animal rights activists who are not terrorists. They (and I happen to be one of them) don't participate in a sit-in with the intention of killing mass numbers of people. I know there are a few out there, but most of them aren't like that. But the government has labeled them as terrorists or potential terrorists. For the most part, I don't buy that. Most of them aren't out to kill mass numbers of people, they're out to make a statement, which I believe is protected under the right to freedom of speech. Am I correct? Is this some sort of "whacked up mentality"?
